Why go green in the Netherlands — and why now
- Lower energy bills. Generating your own power with solar panels and running your home on an all-electric heat pump reduces what you pay for gas and electricity.
- Beat the 2027 deadline. The net-metering scheme ends on 1 January 2027. A home battery lets you store your own solar power and keep using it yourself instead of feeding it back for little in return.
- A more valuable, future-proof home. A better energy label makes a Dutch home more comfortable and more attractive should you ever sell or move on.
- No Dutch required. We handle the advice, subsidies, paperwork and installation with you in English.

The end of net metering in 2027 — what it means for you
Right now the Dutch net-metering scheme (salderingsregeling) lets you offset the solar power you feed into the grid against the power you take from it. This scheme ends on 1 January 2027. After that, feeding surplus solar power back to the grid earns you much less. The answer is a home battery: it stores your daytime solar power so you can use it in the evening, keeping more of your own energy instead of selling it back cheaply. Learn more on our net metering 2027 page.
Subsidies and financing you can use
- 0% VAT on residential solar. In the Netherlands, solar panels for private homes are charged at 0% VAT (BTW), so you pay the price excluding VAT.
- ISDE subsidy for heat pumps. An all-electric heat pump can qualify for the national ISDE subsidy, lowering your upfront cost.
- 0% Nationaal Warmtefonds loan. Energy-saving measures can be financed at 0% interest for incomes up to €60,000 (2.1% otherwise), with terms up to 20 years.
Which incentives apply depends on your situation — whether you own your home, your income and the measures you choose. Our advisor goes through it with you in English so nothing gets lost in translation.

Request free adviceFrequently asked questions
- Can I arrange solar panels, a home battery or a heat pump in English?
- Yes. Energie Morgen guides expats in the Netherlands entirely in English — from the first advice call to installation and aftercare. We have our own installers throughout the country, so you deal with one point of contact instead of juggling several Dutch-only suppliers.
- What does the end of net metering in 2027 mean for me?
- The Dutch net-metering scheme (salderingsregeling) ends on 1 January 2027. Until then you can offset the solar power you feed back against the power you draw from the grid. After that the compensation for feed-in drops sharply, so storing your own solar power in a home battery and using it yourself becomes the smart move.
- Which subsidies and financing can I use as a homeowner?
- Residential solar panels carry 0% VAT (BTW) in the Netherlands, so you pay the price excluding VAT. Heat pumps can qualify for the ISDE subsidy. And energy-saving measures can be financed through the Nationaal Warmtefonds at 0% interest for incomes up to €60,000 (2.1% otherwise), with terms up to 20 years. What applies depends on your situation; our advisor maps it out for you in English.
- I rent my home — can I still do this?
- Solar panels, a home battery and a heat pump are permanent installations, so they normally require that you own the home (or have your landlord's approval). If you own your house or apartment, you're all set; if you rent, we can talk through what is possible in your situation.
- How does the process work from start to finish?
- You request free advice, we discuss your home and your goals in English, and you receive a tailored proposal for solar panels, a home battery, a heat pump or the complete EnergieVrij package. If you go ahead, our own installers handle everything and we stay your single point of contact for aftercare.
